Food Truck and Delivery Driving
Drivers of the Food Truck should be carefully vetted and selected. Drivers must adhere to all DOT requirements, such as getting a DOT physical, completing a Basic Skills Training course, having an MVR run on their driving history, and filling out a driver application form. In addition, drivers should execute safe driving rules and accident prevention practices, including, but not limited to the following:
Seat belts should always be worn
Drive with headlights on
Avoid backing up vehicle – pull through a parking spot whenever possible
Maintain proper speed based on posted limits and obey all traffic signs
Use turn signals
Avoid distractions – use of hand-held mobile phones (talking or texting) or other electronic devices is
strictly prohibited while the vehicle is in motion, including at a stop light. Should a cell phone be used
for navigation purposes, it is recommended to use a cell phone mount.
Maintain proper safe following distance to other vehicles and do not follow too closely – apply the four-
second rule!
Raise your visual horizon – look 12-15 seconds up the road. If you can’t see that far, then you are driving
too fast or following too closely.
Use and look at rearview and side mirrors every five to eight seconds to assess what vehicles are behind
and beside you – identify space around the vehicle and have a way out.
Size up the scene while stopped at an intersection.
Execute the “safety wedge” when stopped at all intersections: if first in line, stop well behind crosswalks
and stop lines; if behind another vehicle, stop far enough back so you can see its two rear tires meet the
road.
Before crossing through intersections, pause for three seconds to ensure other drivers are not running a
red light
For inclement weather, speeds must be reduced. If vehicle begins to hydroplane, take foot off
accelerator and stay calm. Never hit the brake, as the vehicle can lose control.
If heavy rainstorm causes visibility issues, pull over to a safe place until rain slows down – never stop on
the side of a highway
Avoid being in another vehicle’s blind spot
Be alert and assess other drivers’ behaviors. Are they using their phone? Are they swerving into your
lane? Are they changing lanes without signaling? If you see any erratic behaviors, slow down a find a
way to get out of their path.
Anticipate the actions of other drivers.
